On a mission to end gender-based violence (GBV) through early education and empowerment, Firm Health Care Foundation recently organized a comprehensive sensitization and awareness outreach at Treasure International Secondary School, located in Naze, Owerri North LGA, Imo State.
This important outreach, held within the school premises, brought together students, teachers, and GBV advocates in an interactive learning environment designed to educate, inspire, and equip young people with the tools they need to prevent and respond to gender-based violence in all its forms.
Why This Outreach Matters
Gender-based violence continues to be a silent epidemic in many communities across Nigeria, often rooted in harmful stereotypes, ignorance, and silence. Young people—especially girls—are among the most vulnerable.
Firm Health Care Foundation recognizes the urgent need to introduce preventive education early, helping children and adolescents understand their rights, how to protect themselves, and how to speak up or seek help when abuse happens. The outreach at Treasure International School is one of many planned efforts to push back against this threat to the physical and mental well-being of the youth.

What the Program Covered
The sensitization program featured engaging talks and practical sessions delivered by trained facilitators, healthcare professionals, and social workers. Key topics included:
- Understanding Gender-Based Violence
- Types of GBV: physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse
- Consent and Respect in Relationships
- Early Warning Signs of Abuse
- Safe Reporting Channels
- Legal Protections for Victims
- The Role of Bystanders and Peer Support
Interactive role-plays, real-life case studies, and anonymous question sessions allowed students to openly engage and better understand the realities and dangers of GBV in their daily lives.
Health Checks and One-on-One Counseling
Beyond awareness, the outreach also offered free basic health screenings and private counseling for students who may be facing personal challenges. These services created a safe and confidential environment for students to seek support, ask questions, and receive expert guidance.
The Voices of Impact
Teachers and students alike shared heartfelt testimonials about the impact of the session. A student participant said:
“I didn’t know that certain behaviors we normalized could actually be abuse. Now I know how to speak up and help my friends too.”
The school’s principal expressed deep appreciation to Firm Health Care Foundation, noting that the session was “an eye-opener that every school needs.”
